Thinking about: -Ambition/the impossibility of achieving some kind of sustained ascension (Tonya pictured here at the zenith of her career, mid-triple axel at the 1991 US National Figure Skating Championships, where she became the first American woman to land a triple axel in competition. Three years later, her career devolved into scandal. Recent documentaries have shed light on her lifelong struggle with domestic abuse) -Women, performance expectations and the elusive “glass ceiling” (figure skating being a sport where you are literally scored on demonstrated strength & femininity) -Something about personal gravity: As a woman/mom/working artist/21st-century human, I am always trying to keep a million balls in the air. Often I feel like the atoms that make up my body are literally flying off in every direction. We are each a solar system. It is our job to keep ourselves centered & spinning fast enough to keep our own gravity intact. If we don’t tend to our own foundation, there is no way we can support and uplift others. This piece is about that. Trying to spin fast enough, consistently enough, to stay centered, intact, and moving upward. Trying to keep enough personal momentum to support and strengthen everyone in ones’ orbit. Just a study (made with tiny paper cutouts). Hoping to make better version in the future.
